Panosteitis or Growing Pains, Dogs and Cats Get Them Too

Panosteitis (Growing Pains), Dogs & Cats Get Them Too

Puppies and kittens are a lot like little humans.  They love to be active, they grow fast, and with growing comes growing pains.  Just like humans, the growing pains cause inflammation which can cause them to feel sore, but don’t worry as it is easy to give them relief.

Growing pains in the longer leg bones of both dogs and cats is known as Panosteitis.  It is an inflammation of the outer surface on the bones as they grow.  Unlike some mobility disorders, panosteitis can jump around from bone to bone and spot to spot which is why your furry friend may show symptoms in the back left leg one day, and the front right one the next.

The most common symptom of growing pains is called “lameness” which is when the dog or cat does not use one or more of their legs because the appendage is in pain.

When a dog or cat has a "lame leg" you’ll see them limping or avoiding putting pressure on it.  And there’s good news, this disorder is self-limiting and will go away on its own usually within a couple days to a week.  If you think your dog or cat is suffering from it, a quick x-ray at a veterinary office will let you know for sure.

Once you know your pet has Panosteitis, you can treat it with anti-inflammatory medicine.  An easy one is a CBD oil for mobility and joint support as it will help reduce inflammation and give them relief.  Your vet may recommend other inflammatory medicines like meloxicam or carprofen which can be administered just like the CBD oils via a syringe or hidden in food.

It doesn’t hurt to also ask your veterinarian if foods rich in anti-inflammatory nutrients like magnesium, or treats like broccoli may help.  However cats are mostly carnivores so you’ll want something rich in Omega-3 fatty acids like salmon.  There’s an interesting study here about fish oils and their impact on both feline and canine health including orthopedic diseases and inflammation.

Growing pains whether human or furry friends are part of the process of growing up.  They’re nothing to be afraid of, and not something anyone has to suffer through.  Talk to your veterinarian about the best treatment for your cat or dog, and if they say CBD is a good option, click here to try our CBD for joint support and mobility.
